Boulder County Sheriff appoints a new Undersheriff, Carey Weinheimer

Undersheriff Tommy Sloan retires after 34 years of service

Boulder County, Colo. - Undersheriff Tommy Sloan is retiring after serving with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office for just over 34 years. Sloan started his career with the sheriff’s office in 1988 after serving in the United States Army. He was appointed to sergeant in 1994 where supervised in Patrol and served in various roles until 2004, including the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Drug Task Force, SWAT Team, and as the sergeant in the Town of Lyons from 2002-2004, which is a role often seen as the town’s chief of police.

In 2004, he was promoted to the Operations Division Patrol Commander where he supervised Patrol, SIU, SWAT, Bomb Squad, and K-9 teams. In 2013, he was promoted to Division Chief over the Operations Division and then to Undersheriff in 2016. Over his law enforcement career, he has been involved in numerous high profile and significant incidents including responding to the Columbine High School shooting, the Hill riots, numerous homicide cases, drug cases, and a fugitive hunt for suspects who killed a police officer in Cortez.

According to Sheriff Joe Pelle, “Tommy Sloan has been a tremendous leader, manager, friend and confidant. We have run the sheriff’s office in a partnership fashion, and as Undersheriff Tommy has primarily managed all the business operations of the sheriff’s office. He has mentored and trained a new generation of leadership, and as any good leader should this includes his replacement.”

Undersheriff Carey Weinheimer, the newly appointed undersheriff, most recently worked at the Boulder Police Department as a deputy chief. Weinheimer started his career in law enforcement working as an officer with the Vail Police Department and then a deputy for the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, before moving over to the Boulder Police Department in 1990.

While at the Boulder Police Department, he worked as a patrol officer and detective and was promoted to sergeant in 1998. As a sergeant, Weinheimer served as a patrol sergeant, detective sergeant and supervised the Community Services Unit. He was promoted to commander in 2009, where he oversaw Patrol Watch I. He was promoted to the rank of deputy chief in 2014. Weinheimer is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

Sheriff Pelle stated, “Carey represents the next generation in executive management at the sheriff’s office. He is Curtis Johnson’s pick to serve as his undersheriff in the next in-coming administration. Tommy Sloan’s retirement gave us the opportunity to bring Carey on early, and orient and train him for several months prior to my retirement. Our hope is to provide a seamless and smooth transition in administration for our employees and the community. I am very pleased to appoint Carey to undersheriff and confident in his skills and ability.”

Sloan and Weinheimer both started at the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office on the exact same day, July 5, 1988.
